John Carter Edgar Rice Burroughs, an 1881-year-old, attends the funeral for his father John Carter. Carter was an former American Civil War Confederate Army Captain who suddenly passed away. Burroughs is given his personal journal by Carter’s lawyer to Burroughs.
In an instant flashback to 1868, in the Arizona Territory, the Union Colonel Powell is detained by Carter with the hope that Carter will help in the battle against local Apache. Carter escapes from his cell, but fails to make it to the other side, despite U.S. cavalry soldiers in close pursuit. After a run-in with Apaches, Carter and a wounded Powell are chased until they retreat into the cave that is discovered to be brimming with gold. Thern is seen in the cave in this instant, shocked by the two men, and slashes the two men with a knife. Carter is killed. However, he accidentally activates the powerful Thern’s medallion and is then transported by accident to the ruined and dying planet Barsoom, which is named by Carter as Mars. Because of his different bone density and Mars’s low gravity, Carter is able to leap high and do feats of astonishing power. The Green Martian Tharks are the ones who take him in, along with Tars Tarkas and their Jeddak.
In the other part of Barsoom Barsoom, the Red Martian cities of Helium and Zodanga are at war for a thousand years. Sab Than, Jeddak from Zodanga is armed with a unique weapon he obtained from Matai Shang and proposes a cease-fire. He suggests that the war should be concluded by Dejah Thoris who is the princess of Helium. Carter helps the Princess, and she escapes.
Dejah, Carter, and Tarkas’s daughter, Sola, find a area in a sacred river to find a way Carter to return to Earth. She offers Carter instructions on how to utilize the medallion to return to Earth. Carter is then taken captive by Shang who clarifies the role played by Therns. They have a profound influence on the civilisations of the world to their demise and take advantage of the resources of the planet. They are planning to repeat the same thing with Barsoom, choosing Sab Than to be the planet’s ruler. This is the moment that Carter takes out Hajus. Hajus is now the chief of the Tharks.
The Thark army attacks Helium and takes out the Zodangan army. Sab Than dies. Shang must leave. Carter is made the prince of Helium due to the marriage of Dejah. He throws his medallion. Shang appears briefly and is able to challenge Carter in a fight, causing him to return to Earth. Carter embarks on an extended search for the medallions they have on Earth; after several years the man dies suddenly and asks for unusual funeral arrangements in the manner of the case if he’d discovered an award, since returning to Mars could put his Earth body to be in a coma-like state. This makes Burroughs his protector.
Burroughs is returning in the present, and returns to the tomb of Carter with clues to unlock it. While he’s getting ready to start the Thern is seen. He raises a weapon, and shoots Carter in the back. He reveals that he has never located another medallion; instead, he came up with a plan to entice a Thern from hidingand win Shang’s challenge. Carter utilizes the medallion of the dead Thern in order to go back to Barsoom
